Co-Ops and Internships

Good grades help you stand out as a candidate, so maintaining a high GPA should be your priority. As a freshman, it’s a good idea to participate in career-related events and join student organizations.

The Career Services office can help with a resume or cover letter and assist you with locating where to find and apply for internships and co-ops. e. Next, ask your faculty, both full-time and adjunct, if they know of any openings in your field. Don’t forget to ask family, friends, classmates, faculty, advisors, neighbors —basically everyone you know — if they hear of any internship opportunities. Effectively utilize online searches and in-person career events to learn about as many opportunities as possible.

Once you complete your profile on LinkedIn, you can ask to join the closed LinkedIn group called “Career Services at Capitol Technology University.” Internship and full time opportunities are posted almost daily.  To have internship information sent directly to your inbox, adjust your settings to receive an update each time a new discussion is posted.

The following schedule is the general timeline of when internships are announced. However, the earlier you begin searching, the more opportunities you are likely to find. If you live far from campus, consider looking online for summer internships in your hometown.

• Spring Internships: Apply in early to mid fall (summer and early fall for internships requiring security clearances)
• Summer Internships: Apply in fall to mid spring (early fall for internships requiring security clearances)
• Fall Internships: Apply mid spring to early fall (late fall or early spring for internships requiring security clearances)

Some internships pay, others do not. Remember, the goal of an internship is to gain experience to give you a better sense of the “real-world” and help you standout in your job search after graduation.  Some companies will let you earn academic credit for your internship. Once you start looking for intern opportunities, you’ll discover a wide range of possibilities.
