At Capitol Technology University, we’re committed to providing an excellent education that’s affordable for all students. We offer you reasonable tuition and fees, and a broad array of financial aid options. In fact, more than 80 percent of Capitol’s students receive some form of financial assistance.
Our experienced financial aid staff will assist you in finding the funds to help pay for your education.
Here are some of your funding options: (Scholarships are available to full-time undergraduate students taking on campus courses.)
Institutional Scholarships
Capitol Technology University has a number of merit-based scholarships. High school and transfer applicants for undergraduate acceptance are automatically reviewed for these.
First-Year Student
High school students who apply to Capitol Technology University for admission as first-year students automatically have their applications reviewed for one of four institutional scholarship programs: Richard J. Heiman, Presidential, Board of Trustees, and Wainwright Scholarships. Students whose cumulative grade point average and enrollment in AP/IB/PLTW or Honors courses fit into the Merit Scholarship Grid will automatically receive a scholarship. Students who have not enrolled in AP/IB/PLTW or Honors courses will be evaluated on their GPA alone. All students will be notified by the Office of Admissions of their award amount. All scholarships require full-time enrollment in on campus programs and are limited to four years.
All the scholarships are annually renewable to recipients who maintain a 3.0 grade point average and complete 24 credits each year.
ACE Scholarship Program
Capitol Technology University will offer a $5,000 scholarship to ACE Mentor Program students. These funds may be used toward full-time tuition in any undergraduate course of study at the university and the award is renewable up to a total of $20,000 over four years, contingent upon good academic standing.
To be eligible for this scholarship you must:- be a senior in high school;
- have participated in at least one full season during your junior or senior year in the ACE Mentor Program; and
- complete the admissions application, submit personal essay, high school transcripts, and a letter from ACE mentor confirming participation on the team.
Board of Trustees Scholarship
Named to recognize the service and support of the university's Board of Trustees members. Awards range from $4,000 to $6,500. Eligible applicants will have at least a 2.5 GPA.Capitol Scholars Program Scholarship
The Capitol Scholars Program is designed for 5 remarkable students who have the ability to excel in the fields of engineering, information technology, and computer science. Scholars not only receive a full scholarship, but the opportunity to participate in a prestigious four-year program that is challenging, integrated, and hands-on.CMIT Scholarship
Capitol Technology University offers a $2,000 annual scholarship to graduates of Chesapeake Math and IT Academy who enroll full-time in a degree program. The award is renewable for up to four years with full-time enrollment and 3.0 GPA.Cyber Competitor Scholarship
Capitol Technology University offers $20,000 to undergraduate students who compete on their high school Cyber, Gaming or Coding Team, or, who attend Capitol’s Cyber Saturday or Cyber Summer Camp. The award is disbursed $5,000/year.- enroll full-time

First Responders Scholarship
Capitol Technology University offers a $5,000/year scholarship to the dependents of a current/active-duty first responder or dependents (age 18-26 years old) of a first responder who lost their life in the line of duty. Award is renewable to recipients who are full-time and maintain a 3.0 GPA.FIRST Robotics Scholarship
Capitol Technology University offers a $5,000 scholarship to Robotics students. These funds may be used toward any full-time on campus undergraduate course of study at the university and the award is renewable up to a total of $20,000 over four years, contingent upon good academic standing.To be eligible for this scholarship you must:
- be a senior in high school; and
- participate in a competitive robotics team during your junior or senior year, such as FIRST or VEX.
Future Kings STEM Scholarship
Capitol Technology University offers a $5,000 annual scholarship to students who participate one full year during their junior or senior year in the Future Kings STEM Program and enroll full-time in an on campus degree program. The award is renewable to those who maintain a 3.0 GPA and full-time enrollment.Matching Out of State Grant
Capitol Technology will match any out of state grant awarded by the associated State Higher Education Commission up to $5000, excluding District of Columbia. Student must submit award notification from the State Higher Education Commission reflecting amount and award year. This award is not renewal. Student must reapply each year to the associated State Agency.Presidential Scholarship
Eligible applicants will have a GPA between 2.9 and 3.9. Awards range from $7,000 to $9,000. Eligibility is determined automatically with application to the university.Richard J. Heiman Scholarship
Named in honor of a dedicated member of the Capitol Technology University Board of Trustees, this is the most honored and prestigious of the institutional scholarships. Awards range from $10,000 to $12,000. Eligible applicants will have at least a 3.4 cumulative GPA. Eligibility is determined automatically with a complete application to the university. Heiman Scholarship awardees are invited to our Capitol Scholars program in January to compete for additional scholarships up to full tuition.Student Ambassador Scholarship
Student Ambassadors with a minimum of 20 hours of service and a 3.0 GPA may apply for this scholarship each year. Award amount $2000 per academic year.TARC
Team America Rocketry Challenge – Students who participated in the TARC program during High School are eligible for this renewal scholarship valued at $5000 per academic year. Student must submit proof of participation.Wainwright Scholarship
Named in honor of Capitol Technology’s first Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dick Wainwright. Awards range from $2,000 to $3,500. at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA. Eligibility is determined automatically with a complete application to the university.Transfer Student
Transfer Scholarship
Awarded to eligible applicants who graduate from a partner community college with an earned Associates degree and a 3.0 cumulative GPA and who enroll in one of Capitol’s degree programs. Contact Admissions for a list of partner community colleges. Students enrolled part-time (6-11 credits/semester) are awarded $6,000/year for up to four years. Students enrolled full-time (12+ credits/semester) are awarded $12,000/year for up to two years. Awards are renewable and require a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. (This scholarship may not be used with other Capitol transfer scholarships.)Capitol Technology University Scholarships
These scholarships, ranging from $4,000 to $10,000, are offered to qualifying community college students who transfer to Capitol Technology University. Eligible students must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and submit an essay. The scholarship is renewable to students who maintain a 2.8 GPA and complete 24 credits each academic year.Transfer Honor Society
– Transfer students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society or other college Honor Society with a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.5, who apply and are accepted full-time by May 1st for Fall semester or November 1st for spring semester, may qualify for a $2000 scholarship. Must enroll in an on-ground degree program. Renewable each academic year with a 3.5 GPA.Corporation and Foundation Scholarships and Endowed Scholarships

The donors have established their own criteria and requirements, such as academic merit or financial need. Avrum Gudelsky Memorial Award
The Avrum Gudelsky Memorial Awards has been made available through an endowment created by Homer and Martha Gudelsky in memory of their son, Avrum. This scholarship recognizes and encourages academic excellence among outstanding seniors who are pursuing a bachelor of science degree. It is the highest academic honor the college confers. This scholarship is for senior level students with at least a 3.5 GPA and who have earned a minimum of 90 credits.The Brigadier General Harold R. “Johnny” Johnson and Maria Baciu Johnson Scholarship
This scholarship was endowed by the Johnson family and William O. Hider, in memory of Brigadier General Harold R. “Johnny” Johnson and his wife, Maria Baciu Johnson. The Brigadier General was the fifth president of Capitol Technology University. This scholarship is for junior level students pursuing a career in innovation, entrepreneurship or business. Each year, Capitol selects at least five outstanding incoming freshmen for a full four-year scholarship.

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must have:
- a 3.0 GPA or higher; and
- attended three or more AP/Honors/IB/PLTW or concurrent enrolled courses with a C or better.
How to Apply
- Apply to the college and be accepted.
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Results must be sent to the Capitol Technology University (School Code 001436) Office of Financial Aid two weeks prior to interviews.
- Nominated students are invited to a CSP Interview and Presentation Day to present their academic interests. Students may consult with an admissions representative for interview preparation.

The federal government has grant programs for students who demonstrate financial need. Maryland and many other states also have need-based grant programs for full and part-time students.
Grants are financial aid awards that do not have to be paid back. To be considered for grants, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Grants are available to undergraduate students.
- Federal Pell Grant. Pell Grants are free money awarded by the Federal Government to undergraduate students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. Filing the FAFSA constitutes applying for a Pell Grant. Make sure to include Capitol Technology University's School Code, #001436 on the FAFSA. Once the Financial Aid Office receives the FAFSA results you will be notified of your award.
- The Howard P. Rawlings Educational Excellence Awards. These grants are awarded by the Maryland Higher Education Commission, Office of Student Financial Assistance to full-time Maryland residents who file their FAFSA by March 1st deadline. The FAFSA is the application.
- Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG). Another program of the federal government, SEOG grants are given to students with exceptional financial need. Students who have filed their FAFSA by March 1 and meet eligibility requirements are automatically considered for a SEOG grant.
- Veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq Conflicts (VAIC) Scholarship. VAIC is awarded by Maryland Higher Education Commission, Office of Student Financial Assistance and is designed to provide financial assistance to United States armed forces personnel who served in the Afghanistan or Iraq Conflicts, and their sons, daughters, or spouses who are current high school seniors, and full-time or part-time, degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled in an eligible accredited Maryland postsecondary institution.
- Maryland Part-Time Grant. These grants are funded by the Maryland Higher Education Commission, Office of Student Financial Assistance. Awards are made by Capitol Technology University to Maryland residents enrolled part-time (3 to 11 credits) in a degree program, who have demonstrated financial need and who have completed the FAFSA. Priority is given to those who filed their FAFSA by March 1st. These funds are limited.
- Maryland Guaranteed Access Grant (GA). These grants are awarded by the Maryland Higher Education Commission, Office of Student Financial Assistance to current high school seniors who complete a college preparatory program, demonstrate financial need and enroll full-time in a two or four year degree program within the State of Maryland. Individual must be a Maryland resident, file a FAFSA by March 1st deadline and complete the Guaranteed Access Grant application by March 1st. Apply here: https://mdcaps.mhec.state.md.us/
- Maryland 2+2 Transfer Scholarship. These scholarships are awarded by the Maryland Higher Education Commission, Office of Student Financial Assistance and are designed to assist transfer students from Maryland community colleges to attend a 4-year institution within the State. Individual must have earned an associate’s degree by the end of the semester you intend to transfer, complete the FAFSA by March 1st and demonstrate financial need.
- Edward T. and Mary A. Conroy Memorial Scholarship Program. This program is funded by the Maryland Higher Education Commission, Office of Student Financial Assistance and awarded by Capitol Technology University. Individual must be a Maryland resident at the time of the application and enrolled full or part-time in a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate program. The program is designed to assist individuals affected by military service related disabilities or death whose veterans educational benefits have been exhausted; and, victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Virginia or the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. Loans
The federal government has loan programs with low interest rates for undergraduate students and their parents.
Loans are available to both undergraduate and graduate students and must be repaid. Students must be enrolled at least half time (six credits each semester) and cannot borrow more than their cost of attendance minus other financial aid received.
Federal Direct Loan. Students can take out a low-interest Direct Loan through a program sponsored by the federal government. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) determines a student's eligibility. If you file a FAFSA and include the Capitol Technology University code, 001436, Capitol's Financial Aid Office will inform you of the Direct Loan amount for which you qualify.
There are subsidized Direct Loans for students with financial need and unsubsidized Direct Loans for students regardless of financial need.
- Subsidized Direct Loans - the interest on the loan is paid by the federal government while students are enrolled in school at least half-time and during grace and deferment periods. Interest rates on the loans, which can differ according to the year the loans begin, are below commercial loan rates.
- Unsubsidized Direct Loans - students are responsible for the interest that accrues on the loan during in-school and grace periods. Interest may be paid as it accrues or it can be added to the loan principal.
All first-time borrowers of both subsidized and unsubsidized loans must participate in a loan entrance counseling session at least once. Capitol Technology University students must fulfill this requirement online. To review frequently asked questions concerning Federal Direct Loans, click here.
Parent and Grad PLUS Loans. The PLUS program, also sponsored by the federal government, is available to parents of dependent undergraduate students and graduate students who have borrowed their maximum annual or aggregate loan amount to help pay for their children's education regardless of financial need.
Students must be enrolled at least half-time (6 credits).
- The loan is based on credit history. Parents/Grad students must have good credit history.
- A FAFSA must be completed.
- Parents and Grad students may borrow up to the cost of the education minus any other aid their children receive. Parent/Grad student must complete the PLUS Master Promissory Note and credit check found online at http://www.studentloans.gov. The credit check must be done each academic year the loan is borrowed.
- Parents and Grad students with adverse credit history may be required to complete an online Entrance Counseling Session before the loan can be disbursed.
- Interest accrues upon disbursement. Interest can be paid as accrued or added to the principal of the loan.
- Repayment begins immediately after the final disbursement for the academic year.
- The interest rate for the PLUS is variable, with a maximum rate of 9 percent. The rate is adjusted every July 1, based on the 52-week Treasury Bill on June 1, plus 3.1 percent.
Alternative Educational Loan Programs. These loans are available if additional funds are needed over and above what you receive under the federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs. Over the past few years, some of our students have borrowed educational loans from their credit unions and banks, Discover, PNC, Sallie Mae and Wells Fargo, to mention a few. Note: Capitol Technology University does not have a Preferred Lender List nor does it endorse the lenders previously used by some of our students.
ROTC
Capitol Technology University in collaboration with the University of Maryland College Park offers perspective and current students the opportunity to participate in UMCP's ARMY ROTC Program. ROTC students can receive full tuition and fees and a monthly stipend while attending class. For more information please visit the MyCapitol Portal ROTC page.
Work-Study Employment
On-campus jobs allow students to earn money toward educational expenses.
On-campus jobs are available to both undergraduate and graduate students under the Federal University Work-Study and Capitol Technology University Work-Study programs. These work programs offer students the opportunity to earn money to meet educational and personal expenses during the year and to get on-the-job work experience.

Students interested in work study should first contact Financial Aid to see which work-study program they are eligible for and then search online for available positions.
Federal Work-Study
Federal Work-Study is funded by the federal government and awarded by Financial Aid to eligible students who have filed their FAFSA. It is the policy of Capitol Technology University that while class is in session during fall and spring, students cannot work more than 20 hours per week.
Capitol Technology University Work-Study
Students not awarded Federal Work-Study can consider employment under the Capitol Technology University Work-Study program. Funding for this program is provided by various campus departments. Admitted students can contact Financial Aid for more information. Student employers decide the maximum hours students may work each week.
Veterans' Benefits
If you are a veteran or a veteran’s dependent, you may be eligible for educational benefits.
Eligible applicants and their dependents may qualify for veterans' educational benefits that are available through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. If you think you may be entitled to these benefits, contact the VA's education information hotline at 1-888-442-4551 or go to www.gibill.va.gov.
To use your benefits, you must be admitted to the college in a program approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
In general, you will begin to receive your benefits after the Registration and Records Office certifies your enrollment and education plan. You'll receive benefits only during your times of certified enrollment. Contact the Registration and Records Office each semester you plan to use benefits so we can certify your enrollment. It can take two to three months for the federal government to process the benefits application.
First-time applicants for veterans' educational benefits
If you are applying for Veteran education benefits for the first time at Capitol Technology University, you must complete the Application to use VA Benefits at Capitol Technology University form. Upon completion, mail or fax (301-369-2328) this form to the Registration and Records Office.You must also submit a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility and DD-214. Documents can be e-mailed to VABenefits@CapTechU.edu or faxed to 301-369-2313.
All new and continuing applicants for veterans' educational benefits
All new and continuing veterans applying for educational benefits must complete a VA Certification Request form for each semester enrolled. You will find more information about these forms located in the MyCapitol portal. .

Avrum Gudelsky Memorial Award
The Avrum Gudelsky Memorial Awards has been made available through an endowment created by Homer and Martha Gudelsky in memory of their son, Avrum. This scholarship recognizes and encourages academic excellence among outstanding seniors who are pursuing a bachelor of science degree. It is the highest academic honor the college confers. This scholarship is for senior level students with at least a 3.5 GPA and who have earned a minimum of 96 credits.The Brigadier General Harold R. “Johnny” Johnson and Maria Baciu Johnson Scholarship
This scholarship was endowed by the Johnson family and William O. Hider, in memory of Brigadier General Harold R. “Johnny” Johnson and his wife, Maria Baciu Johnson. The Brigadier General was the fifth president of Capitol Technology University. This scholarship is for junior level students pursuing a career in innovation, entrepreneurship or business. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA and have earned 66 – 95 credits.Helpful Links

First-time freshmen and transfer undergraduate international applicants are automatically considered for merit scholarships.
First-Time Freshmen - Merit scholarship is awarded based on the calculated Grade Point Average (GPA) shown on the applicant’s submitted credential evaluation.
Transfer – Merit scholarship for applicants transferring from a post-secondary institution is awarded based on the Grade Point Average (GPA) and academic coursework completed.

Hometown Heroes Tuition Discount
We honor those who serve their local communities:
- Community College faculty and staff
- High school teachers and administrators
- Emergency Personnel (EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, and police)
These heroes receive a 20% tuition discount for graduate programs (Master’s and Doctoral Degrees).
Yellow Ribbon Program
Capitol Technology University proudly participates in the Yellow Ribbon GI Educational Enhancement Program which provides additional funds for education without additional charges to a veteran’s GI entitlement. This program allows qualifying veterans the opportunity to attend one of Capitol’s graduate programs tuition free.
Blue Ribbon Program
Capitol Technology University designed the Blue Ribbon program to provide working professionals who are not eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program a funding resource for their master's program. There are three funding opportunities under the Blue Ribbon Program:
- Blue Ribbon Scholarship provides a $1500 scholarship. A master’s degree student who has successfully completed three master’s level courses with a 3.0 CGPA may receive a tuition scholarship of $500 per course for the next three consecutive courses. A student may renew the scholarship during their ninth course.
- Blue Ribbon Referral provides full tuition for one master’s course given to a student in a master’s degree who refers a student to any of the university’s degree programs – undergraduate, masters or doctoral.
- Blue Ribbon Guarantee Reimbursement Scholarship guarantees up to 50% of tuition costs when your Employer Tuition Assistance is cut during any eight week term.
Private Scholarships
Capitol Technology University’s Financial Aid Staff has developed a list of private scholarships to assist students in financing their education. Scholarship program criteria range from need to merit, to characteristics of applicant to program of study, to geographical. Application deadlines vary. State Scholarships, Grants and Loans
Most States offer scholarships, grants and loans to graduate students who demonstrate financial need. Each State has different programs, deadlines and criteria. It is recommended that you contact your state’s Office of Higher Education for more information.

Loans
The federal government makes low-interest loans available to graduate students. Like all loans, these must be repaid. Students must be enrolled at least half-time (six credits) each semester and can borrow up to their cost of attendance minus all other financial aid received.
Federal Unsubsidized Direct Loan
Graduate students can take out a low-interest Unsubsidized Direct Loan through a program sponsored by the federal government. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid determines a student’s eligibility. If you file a FAFSA and include the Capitol Technology University school code, 001436, Capitol’s Financial Aid Office will inform you of the loan amount for which you qualify. The maximum amount a Grad student may apply for is $20,500 per academic year based on their eligibility. The interest rate is variable and accrues on the loan during in-school and grace periods. Interest may be paid as it accrues or it can be added to the loan principal. To apply for the Unsubsidized Direct Loan go to http://www.studentloans.gov to complete the Master Promissory Note and Entrance Counseling session.
Federal Direct Grad PLUS Loan
The PLUS program, also sponsored by the federal government, is available to graduate students who have borrowed their maximum annual or aggregate loan amount to help pay for education regardless of financial need. Students must be enrolled at least half-time (6 credits).
- The loan is based on credit history. Grad student must have good credit history.
- A FAFSA must be completed.
- Grad student may borrow up to the cost of the education minus any other aid. Grad student must complete the PLUS Master Promissory Note and credit check found online at http://www.studentloans.gov. The credit check must be done each academic year the loan is borrowed.
- Grad students with adverse credit history may be required to complete an online Entrance Counseling Session before the loan can be disbursed.
- Interest accrues upon disbursement. Interest can be paid as accrued or added to the principal of the loan.
- Repayment begins immediately after the final disbursement for the academic year.
- The interest rate for the PLUS is variable, with a maximum rate of 9 percent. The rate is adjusted every July 1, based on the 52-week Treasury Bill on June 1, plus 3.1 percent.

Grants
The federal government has grant programs for students who demonstrate financial need. Maryland and many other states also have need-based grant programs for full and part-time students.
Grants are financial aid awards that do not have to be paid back. To be considered for grants, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Grants are available to undergraduate students.
- Federal Pell Grant. Pell Grants are free money awarded by the Federal Government to undergraduate students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. Filing the FAFSA constitutes applying for a Pell Grant. Make sure to include Capitol Technology University's School Code, #001436 on the FAFSA. Once the Financial Aid Office receives the FAFSA results you will be notified of your award.
- National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (National SMART Grant). An eligible student must receive a Pell Grant during the same award year; be a U.S. citizen; be a full-time student in his or her third or fourth academic year of undergraduate degree study; be pursuing a major in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, engineering or critical foreign language; and have at least a 3.0 grade point average as of the end of the second award year and continue to maintain a 3.0 grade point average.
- The Howard P. Rawlings Educational Excellence Awards. These grants are awarded by the Maryland Higher Education Commission, Office of Student Financial Assistance to full-time Maryland residents who file their FAFSA by March 1st deadline. The FAFSA is the application.
- Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG). Another program of the federal government, SEOG grants are given to students with exceptional financial need. Students who have filed their FAFSA by March 1 and meet eligibility requirements are automatically considered for a SEOG grant.
- Veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq Conflicts (VAIC) Scholarship. VAIC is awarded by Maryland Higher Education Commission, Office of Student Financial Assistance and is designed to provide financial assistance to United States armed forces personnel who served in the Afghanistan or Iraq Conflicts, and their sons, daughters, or spouses who are current high school seniors, and full-time or part-time, degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled in an eligible accredited Maryland postsecondary institution.
- Maryland Part-Time Grant. These grants are funded by the Maryland Higher Education Commission, Office of Student Financial Assistance. Awards are made by Capitol Technology University to Maryland residents enrolled part-time (3 to 11 credits) in a degree program, who have demonstrated financial need and who have completed the FAFSA. Priority is given to those who filed their FAFSA by March 1st. These funds are limited.
- Maryland Guaranteed Access Grant (GA). These grants are awarded by the Maryland Higher Education Commission, Office of Student Financial Assistance to current high school seniors who complete a college preparatory program, demonstrate financial need and enroll full-time in a two or four year degree program within the State of Maryland. Individual must be a Maryland resident, file a FAFSA by March 1st deadline and complete the Guaranteed Access Grant application by March 1st. Apply here: https://mdcaps.mhec.state.md.us/
- Maryland 2+2 Transfer Scholarship. These scholarships are awarded by the Maryland Higher Education Commission, Office of Student Financial Assistance and are designed to assist transfer students from Maryland community colleges to attend a 4-year institution within the State. Individual must have earned an associate’s degree by the end of the semester you intend to transfer, complete the FAFSA by March 1st and demonstrate financial need.
- Edward T. and Mary A. Conroy Memorial Scholarship Program. This program is funded by the Maryland Higher Education Commission, Office of Student Financial Assistance and awarded by Capitol Technology University. Individual must be a Maryland resident at the time of the application and enrolled full or part-time in a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate program. The program is designed to assist individuals affected by military service related disabilities or death whose veterans educational benefits have been exhausted; and, victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Virginia or the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. Loans
The federal government has loan programs with low interest rates for undergraduate students and their parents. Please note, students can refuse to take out loans or can choose to take out less than the maximum allowed.
Loans are available to both undergraduate and graduate students and must be repaid. Students must be enrolled at least half time (six credits each semester) and cannot borrow more than their cost of attendance minus other financial aid received.
Federal Direct Loan. Students can take out a low-interest Direct Loan through a program sponsored by the federal government. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) determines a student's eligibility. If you file a FAFSA and include the Capitol Technology University code, 001436, Capitol's Financial Aid Office will inform you of the Direct Loan amount for which you qualify.
There are subsidized Direct Loans for students with financial need and unsubsidized Direct Loans for students regardless of financial need.
- Subsidized Direct Loans - the interest on the loan is paid by the federal government while students are enrolled in school at least half-time and during grace and deferment periods. Interest rates on the loans, which can differ according to the year the loans begin, are below commercial loan rates.
- Unsubsidized Direct Loans - students are responsible for the interest that accrues on the loan during in-school and grace periods. Interest may be paid as it accrues or it can be added to the loan principal.
All first-time borrowers of both subsidized and unsubsidized loans must participate in a loan entrance counseling session at least once. Capitol Technology University students must fulfill this requirement online. To review frequently asked questions concerning Federal Direct Loans, click here.
Parent and Grad PLUS Loans. The PLUS program, also sponsored by the federal government, is available to parents of dependent undergraduate students and graduate students who have borrowed their maximum annual or aggregate loan amount to help pay for their children's education regardless of financial need.
Students must be enrolled at least half-time (6 credits).

Students should apply for federal financial aid two months (8 weeks) before the session starts to allow adequate time for processing. For aid for fall semester is it best to complete the FAFSA by June 30, for a spring start it is best to complete the FAFSA by October 30 and for a summer term start it is best to complete the FAFSA by February 28.

Veterans' Benefits
Eligible applicants and their dependents may qualify for veterans' educational benefits that are available through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. If you think you may be entitled to these benefits, contact the VA's education information hotline at 1-888-442-4551 or go to www.gibill.va.gov.
To use your benefits, you must be admitted to the college in a program approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
In general, you will begin to receive your benefits after the Registration and Records Office certifies your enrollment and education plan. You'll receive benefits only during your times of certified enrollment.
Contact the Registration and Records Office each semester you plan to use benefits so we can certify your enrollment. It can take two to three months for the federal government to process the benefits application.
First-time applicants for veterans' educational benefits
If you are applying for Veteran education benefits for the first time at Capitol Technology University, you must complete the Application to use VA Benefits at Capitol Technology University form. Upon completion, mail or fax (301-369-2328) this form to the Registration and Records Office.You must also submit a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility and DD-214. Documents can be e-mailed to VABenefits@CapTechU.edu or faxed to 301-369-2313.
All new and continuing applicants for veterans' educational benefits
All new and continuing veterans applying for educational benefits must complete a VA Certification Request form for each semester enrolled. You will find more information about these forms located in the MyCapitol portal.
