Over the past week, Capitol Tech’s Signal-9 Cyber Battle Team has been participating in several cybersecurity challenges and competitions, including Hivestorm and MAGIC CTF 17. Signal-9, one of our university’s notable competitive teams, represents Capitol Tech in these events which are hosted across the states, and joining this team is the perfect way for students to get more involved in cybersecurity, hone their technical skills, and network with industry partners and peers.
On Wednesday, Oct 16, Signal-9 had 5 teams compete with 20 students in total in a collegiate-focused cyber defense competition during Hivestorm, where they performed various forensics-based tasks while correcting misconfigurations, mitigating vulnerabilities, and removing malware on Windows and Linux systems. Students at all levels from Freshman to Seniors were able to compete, gaining great experience.

On Saturday, Oct 19, Signal-9 sent 4 teams with 14 students total to the Autonomous Robotics Innovation Center (ARIC) in Westminster, MD where they competed in the MAGIC CTF 17 Capture the Flag event hosted by Mid-Atlantic Gigabit Innovation Collaboratory. MAGIC sponsors student programming to enhance workforce development for technology companies, particularly in the cybersecurity industry and focuses on competitions that are accessible to learners of all levels. Out of 22 competing teams, each of our teams placed, with Team 1 achieving 3rd place!
