On Tuesday, April 23, Capitol College welcomed members of cybergamut to campus for one of the organization’s “Technical Tuesday” events. The keynote address was delivered by Phil Zimmermann of Silent Circle, and was titled “Secure VoIP and Messaging for Mobile Platforms.”
Zimmermann’s discussion dealt with his interest in secure telephony, which predated secure email, and how he had to wait for technology infrastructure to mature before he could advance in this field. He also discussed how to communicate securely without relying on PKI.
Zimmermann is the cofounder and president of Silent Circle, a private encrypted telecommunications firm based in Silicon Valley and Washington, DC that provides encrypted text, email, mobile phone and video teleconference services. He is the creator of both PGP, the most widely used email encryption software in the world, and the Zfone/ZRTP secure VoIP standard.
In 2012, Zimmermann was honored as an inductee into the Internet Hall of Fame. PC World named him one of the Top 50 Tech Visionaries’ of the last 50 years and InfoWorld named him one of the Top 10 Innovators in E-business. He has received Privacy International’s “Louis Brandeis Award,” CPSR’s Norbert Weiner Award, the EFF Pioneer Award, and the Chrysler Award for Innovation in Design.
cybergamut is a worldwide community of practice for cyber professionals across industry, academia, and government providing ongoing education, training, and certification opportunities throughout all phases of a cyber professional’s career, utilizing traditional methods as well as non-traditional techniques like puzzles, Easter Eggs, and problem solving.
Capitol College is one of cybergamut’s five affiliates and the organization’s only academic affiliate.
