Keeping abreast of cybersecurity risks is an urgent matter not only for professionals in the field, but for anyone who uses a computer or the internet to handle business transactions, exchange sensitive information, or store virtual assets.
To help promote vigilance and best practices among all computer users, the Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance have sponsored National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) every year since 2004.
“Every citizen has a part to play in protecting our critical infrastructure,” said William Butler, chair of the information assurance program at Capitol Technology University. “Although you may not think that phone in your hand or the computer at your desk is critical infrastructure, actually it is. It’s potentially another venue hackers can use to get into the system and wreak havoc. All of us can and should take steps to protect our phones, computers and data and thus help contribute to improved cybersecurity. That’s what this month is all about.”
Capitol students and faculty will be on the road this month, getting that message out to students at area community college and high schools. They will also be encouraging students to consider careers in the high-demand cybersecurity field and highlighting the programs offered at Capitol.
On the Capitol campus, meanwhile, Smart Start Seniors Day will include tours of the Cyber Lab, a unique facility that enables aspiring cyber-warriors to hone their skills at defeating hackers and intruders.
“This event will bring in students from several high schools with STEM programs. We will be highlighting cybersecurity activities and programs here at Capitol, specifically through the Cyber Lab and specific workshops and events here on campus during the day,” said George H. Walls, senior director of admissions.
Wrapping up the month’s events, Capitol will host a booth at the CyberMaryland 2014 event at the Baltimore Convention Center on October 29 and 30.
