Capitol College’s Cyber Lab is one of the state’s premier facilities for exploring the complex and quickly evolving world of cybersecurity. First launched in 2010 with the aid of a BRAC Higher Education Grant, it enables students to simulate, detect, analyze, and combat a wide range of cyber threats.
For aspiring information assurance specialists, the Cyber Lab is a vital supplement to classroom learning. After familiarizing themselves with cybersecurity concepts and principles during their classes, students can amplify what they’ve learned through hands-on activities in the lab.
During the summer, the facility was reorganized and upgraded. The start of the fall 2013 semester brought a fresh team of lab assistants and new operating hours. Rededication of the facility took place on November 4th.
Although the lab is of special value to those majoring in information assurance, the broader Capitol community also has access. It is a resource for any student with an interest in cybersecurity, said information assurance professor William Butler.
“It’s open to all students,” Butler said. “If a business major needs to come in and learn skills, it is available for them to do so. It’s not just for technical students.”
“Hopefully we can increase the level of cyber awareness and education in our student body,” he added.
