On Thursday, March 24, the Capitol College community gathered to honor and celebrate the academic achievements of Capitol’s students during the academic year. Family members, friends and government partners such as Julio Marius from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, attended the ceremony in the Avrum Gudelsky Memorial Auditorium.
Dr. Michael T. Wood, Capitol College president, highlighted the achievements of Capitol students and recognized the hard work they have dedicated all year, in order to reach their own personal goals.
The keynote address for the Honors Convocation was delivered by Nolan Clifford, CEO of Information Solutions LLC. Having previously served as Principal at Deloitte & Touche LLP, director of information assurance at Unisys Corporation, and as a cryptology officer for the U.S. Navy, Clifford shared his thoughts regarding the importance of leadership.
Clifford stressed the importance of students taking advantage of the opportunities afforded to them at Capitol, and noted that by taking leadership roles at Capitol, students are preparing themselves for leadership positions in the workforce. With many baby-boomers reaching the age of retirement, the workforce will be calling upon the young and innovative minds of Capitol graduates.
Following Mr. Clifford’s address, students were recognized for their achievements along with 2010 – 2011 scholarship recipients, dean’s list members for 2010, Space Operation Institute award recipients. Students and faculty members being inducted into the Alpha Chi Honor Society, Sigma Beta Delta Honor Society and the Tau Alpha Pi Honor Society were also acknowledged during the ceremony.
Dr. Michael G. Gibbs, vice president for advancement, recognized the many corporate and individual benefactors who provide funding for individual scholarship and/or have an endowed scholarship fund with the college. Some of the major benefactors that make Capitol’s scholarships possible include The Homer and Martha Gudelsky Foundation;
John G. and Beverly A. Puente; Dettra Communications; The Carl and Sandra English Endowment; Gabriel A Batista; Anthony & Anna L. Carozza Foundation;H Brian Thompson; and M&T Bank Foundation, among others.
Upon conclusion of the ceremony the celebration continued with an informal reception in the Campus Center.
