Gary Burke

A Passion for Construction Science

Born in Alabama, Gary showed a passion for construction and facilities management throughout his life. He received his Bachelor of Science in Building Science at Auburn University in 1981, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Southern Methodist University Cox School of Business in 1989. From 1984-1988, Gary was a Construction Manager with Oxford Commercial Development in Dallas, Texas and was responsible for residential and commercial development projects in both Texas and California. He also gained international construction experience as an Engineer with Blount International on the King Saud University Project in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 1981-1983.

Gary was a Licensed General Contractor and owned and operated Burke Construction Company, Inc, his construction and development firm in North Carolina for 15 years, and was an OSHA Authorized Construction Trainer designated by the U.S. Department of Labor as of 2012. Gary was an instructor with the Department of Construction Management at Western Carolina University in NC from 2004-2013. He was involved with numerous student organizations and competition teams, and chapter advisor for Sigma Lambda Chi International Honor Society. He was also responsible for coordinating student internships and working with industry partners for job placement and business development.

Gary was an active member of the construction community within several groups. Starting in January 2005 to present, he served as Student Chapter Advisor for the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and Team Advisor in the NAHB Residential Construction Management Competition with Western Carolina University. He was also Chapter Advisor for the AGC Associated General Contractors of Carolinas, Faculty Advisor for ABC Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc., and Site Administrator for the American Institute of Constructors & Constructor Certification Commission – showing his dedication to furthering the field of construction science and remaining actively involved in the community.

He won several awards for his work in the field, including placing in the NAHB Residential Construction Management Competition in 2011, 2013, and 2014, and receiving both the Board of Governors Distinguished Teaching Award 2012 – 2013 and Award for Excellence in Mentoring and Advising 2010 - 2011 with the Kimmel School - Western Carolina University.

Prior to joining Capitol Technology University, Gary was Director of the Office of Professional Education at Embry-Riddle Worldwide Aeronautical University. He was responsible for streamlining existing operations, identifying new markets and business opportunities, providing strategic and operational leadership as well as developing mission, strategy, and business planning for program development and implementation. Additionally, he oversaw development and coordination of courses for corporate partners, government, and industry associations.

A Career of Professional Achievements at Capitol

Gary Burke joined Capitol in 2018 as the Vice President of Facilities and Program Director for Construction Management.

During his time with Capitol, he worked on numerous, campus-wide projects to improve the university’s facilities. He oversaw the exterior renovation of the MCI building, completed campus-wide light improvements, installed new building control systems, and brought in natural gas boilers to convert heating over from fuel oil, significantly upgrading our heating/cooling system. His work on roofing projects alone – finding and repairing large water leaks – saved the university thousands of dollars per month. He also worked for many months with the architects and builders on the upcoming lab renovation project, which will be ongoing into 2025, and had begun an Executive Suite expansion project, adding new offices and a larger reception area for incoming staff.

In 2023, Gary participated in Capitol’s first STEM Challenge and subsequent events into 2024, helping middle grade through high school students conceptualize how buildings are made through engaging, hands-on activities. Gary also helped with our Commencement ceremony preparations, ensuring that the campus was a beautiful reflection of this proud day of the year for our students.

He was also actively involved with Capitol’s partnership with the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), and Maryland Center for Construction Education & Innovation (MCCEI). Recently, he gave a presentation at the MCCEI annual professional development event for construction & development teachers hosted at the Great Wolf Lodge in Perryville. Gary shared valuable insights into the current industry landscape, specifically focused on the intersection of cybersecurity and construction, with fellow teachers leading the future workforce.

Honoring a Life of Cherished Moments and Lasting Impact

Gary’s zest for life was evident in everything he did. His thoughtful gestures were a testament to his belief in the importance of nurturing both personal and professional relationships. Gary’s infectious enthusiasm, good humor, and genuine interest in the well-being of others made him a beloved figure on our campus, and his kind spirit will be missed by all who had the pleasure of working with him.

Gary was a devoted family man and a generous member of his community. He is survived by his wife, Debra, and daughter, Brennan. Gary’s love for his family was clear and he spoke of them with pride. His legacy will undoubtedly live on through them, and we extend our deepest condolences during this difficult time.

He was also survived by many friends, co-workers, former and current students, and professional connections that he cherished.

Gary Burke’s passing leaves a significant void and he is deeply missed. His spirit and contributions will forever be a part of our university.
