On Thursday, Sept. 29, friends, students and benefactors of the Capitol community gathered at Glenn Dale Golf Club for the Fourth Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament. The tournament was the largest in Capitol’s history, with more than 100 registrants supporting student scholarships.
Teeing off at 8 a.m., each foursome showed its support of Capitol’s mission and scholarship opportunities. Because many Capitol undergraduates are first-generation college students, scholarships are extremely important to the Capitol community. With more than 80 percent of students receiving some sort of financial aid, the support of each and every benefactor truly impacts Capitol students.
After the tournament, participants, sponsors and friends of the college gathered for lunch and the award announcements. Capitol student and scholarship recipient Tiffany Navas spoke briefly to thank the contributors who make her education and the education of her fellow classmates possible.
Coming in first place for the second consecutive year was the group of Bob Lentz, Robert Lentz and Mike Lentz, with a score of 60. Winning the men’s longest drive contest was Al Rutherford, while Terry O’Neal won the women’s longest drive contest. The closest to the pin contest was won by Lynn Wilson.
A silent auction was also held, with prizes including an assortment of Nike, Titleist and Ping golf clubs, and various golf accessories. The auction helped contribute to Capitol’s largest and most successful Scholarship Golf Tournament to date.
