Edward L. Sealing, Jr: A Pioneer in Tech Innovation

Edward Sealing, Jr. is a visionary leader in innovation and entrepreneurship. Throughout his life, he has always had a proclivity for technology, especially computer science and cybersecurity, and from a young age, he knew he wanted to pursue a career in this field. He learned from the ground up, from fixing computers like his Commodore 64 to testing and taking apart machinery, he developed the hands-on technical expertise that would launch his lifelong interest in technology.

In 1998, Ed enlisted to serve his country in the U.S. Army as a military tech professional after graduating from high school. For seven years, he served as a Satellite Communications Technician in Fort Huachuca, AZ and South Korea, spearheading the military and technical training of platoon subordinates and providing encrypted long-haul communications in the form of NIPR/SIPR/VTC/Telephone communications while deployed to remote locations. From 2005 to 2006, he served as an SSG - Information Assurance and Computer Network Defense Staff member, researching and briefing current internal and external threats to DOD information systems, coordinating response efforts to detected internal and external threats, and conducting technical vulnerability assessments and Site Assisted Visits in Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He also assisted DISA as the on-site subject matter expert for the Southwest Asia (SWA) theater network operations during the Unified Endeavor exercise in Fort Hood, Texas. Ed was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his contributions to the safety and defense of allied information above and beyond the call of duty.

In the years following, Ed secured positions with Northrup Grumman as a Senior Information Assurance Test Engineer, Tresys Technology as a Linux Security Engineer, and Cyber Security Research and Solutions as a Director. Wanting to continue his education, he sought a flexible, on-campus learning experience that would suit his full-time schedule. He discovered Capitol College (now Capitol Technology University) was the perfect fit, offering night classes for him to pursue his degree in cybersecurity. He attended Capitol starting in 2009 and truly enjoyed the experience, noting that “every class that I took was very technical in nature and really helped set me up for success.” Ed graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Information Assurance (now Cybersecurity) in 2012, and that same year, he did what many dream of, but few accomplish – he started his own company. Beginning as a small, innovative start-up in Columbia, Maryland, Sealing Technologies, Inc. (SealingTech) would become a multi-million-dollar business over the following years, making it one of the most successful companies in the area.

What set SealingTech apart was Ed’s visionary leadership and ability to seek a niche or unmet industry need for targeted success. Upon acquiring a federal contract for perimeter defense support, Ed and his team used their skills in host intrusion prevention, testing, and evaluation within the cybersecurity and networking realm to establish SealingTech as an adaptable and remarkably reliable company. That contract revealed another opportunity as well. In an interview, Ed explains that “there are people who do host-based security and there are people who do network-based security, but there aren’t too many out there that combine the two of these together. So that’s where we decided to carve out our niche.” This testament to innovation is what distinguishes SealingTech as a recognized leader in the tech industry.

Over the decades, SealingTech continued to experience profound growth and success under Ed’s leadership, and in 2023, the company was acquired in a groundbreaking transaction valued at up to $200 million by Parsons, a leading disruptive technology provider in the national security and global infrastructure markets. In a press release, Parsons stated that “SealingTech expands Parsons’ customer base across the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community, and further enhances the company’s capabilities in defensive cyber operations; integrated mission-solutions powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML); edge computing and edge access modernization; critical infrastructure protection; and secure data management...SealingTech’s defensive cyber capabilities complement our leading offensive cyber capabilities and increase our share in the full-spectrum cyber operations market.” SealingTech, a Parsons Company, continues to deliver rapid and innovative agile cybersecurity solutions that modernize, protect, and defend the networks and systems of the federal government and private enterprise.

Ed has kept in close contact with his alma mater, Capitol, over the course of his career achievements, sharing in our passion for meeting industry needs through innovative solutions, technology education, and job advancement. He has participated in several projects in support of our university, such as our alumni success stories video series, discussing the ways in which our university fostered his lifelong drive for technology and business. His company has also offered internship opportunities to Capitol students who are pursuing dynamic cyber careers, hosting a booth every year at our on-campus Career Fair to recruit top candidates. Edward Sealing, Jr. is a true innovator and exemplar of success in the tech arena. On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students of Capitol Technology University, we express our deepest gratitude for his continued philanthropy, substantial impact, and generous support.
