Laurel, Maryland—Capitol Technology University is proud to announce that our Space Flight Operations Training Center (SFOTC) was awarded funding by the Maryland Space Grant Consortium (MDSGC). This award is the largest received since the SFOTC was founded in 2014 and will support our SFOTC Modernization and Enhancement Project, which includes upgrading and expanding hardware, software, and simulation capabilities.

Six new servers will support upgraded galaxy telemetry and commanding software and VSAT virtual spacecraft simulators. Other upgrades include uninterruptible power supply (UPS), network switch hardware, and flight dynamics and data management software. Additionally, updates will be made to our student user terminals and instructor areas, as well as spacecraft and ground operations training.

The SFOTC is the only educational center in the state of Maryland dedicated to training students in spacecraft operations in a simulated control center environment. Over its nine years of operations, the lab has continued to meet the needs of students by integrating various mission operational elements that help prepare them to function in operational environments for government and commercial missions. These elements include flight dynamics, instrument planning, spacecraft trending, ground automation, and data management systems. The MDSGC funding will significantly improve SFOTC offerings to the benefit of our students.

The SFOTC Modernization and Enhancement Project is expected to be completed over the 2025 spring and summer terms and will be open to students and faculty in the fall of this year.
