October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, serving as the perfect opportunity to explore new cyber trends and evaluate our own cyber hygiene. From updating passwords to backing up data, there are many ways to celebrate cybersecurity and its many facets this month, and every month!
This year's theme is “Secure Our World,” highlighting the importance of safeguarding our digital lives in an increasingly interconnected world. Cybersecurity is everyone's responsibility, and NCASM offers an opportunity to raise awareness about best practices, how to build resilience, and promoting proactive steps in protecting personal, academic, and professional data. At our university, technology is at our core, and we foster a culture of security and learning, empowering our community to defend against evolving threats and ensuring a safer digital future for everyone.
Capitol Technology University will be hosting and attending many cyber events in promotion of this critical field of study for NCASM. Participants are invited to join us at one or all our events to learn more about cybersecurity and the ways that you can help to "secure our world" and become an advocate for systems and data protection.

Use Strong Passwords and a Password Manager:
The foundation of good cybersecurity starts with strong, unique passwords. Unfortunately, only 38% of people use unique passwords for all their accounts, according to the National Cybersecurity Alliance’s 2023 Oh, Behave! report. Creating complex passwords and leveraging a password manager makes it easier to maintain these standards across multiple accounts, ensuring that even if one password is compromised, others remain secure. Dr. Clifford Benedict, Director of Cyber Labs at Capitol Tech, will discuss this important cybersecurity topic.
October 17 | 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. ET

Securing Digital Identity: The Power of Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA):
As cyber threats evolve, securing access to systems and sensitive data is more critical than ever. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) has emerged as a key defense against unauthorized access, adding multiple layers of security beyond just passwords. This presentation explores the importance of MFA in today’s threat landscape, its role in reducing vulnerabilities associated with compromised credentials, and how it can be seamlessly integrated into both personal and enterprise-level security strategies. Attendees will gain insights into the different types of MFA, best practices for implementation, and the future of identity protection in an increasingly digital world.
