Capitol to promote cybersecurity awareness at top wireless expo

As work and everyday life becomes ever more intertwined with wireless technology, the challenge of ensuring the security of information passed across wireless networks is increasingly urgent. Capitol Technology University will be helping to raise awareness of this vital concern by providing a full-day educational opportunity, “Introduction to Cybersecurity,” at this year’s International Wireless Communications Expo (IWCE), to be held March 16-20 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

IWCE is the authoritative annual event for communication technology professionals. Each year, it attracts more than 7,000 technology buyers from a wide variety of professional sectors, including government/military, law enforcement, public safety, emergency response, the medical profession, transportation, and business enterprise. The event features over 350 exhibitors.

Capitol faculty will be representing the university at the Expo’s educational segment, providing an overview of the cybersecurity field, with an emphasis on wireless. Dr. William “Vic” Maconachy, Capitol’s vice president for academic affairs, will be featured along with cybersecurity program chair William Butler and professor Howard Van Horn. Continuing Professional Education Units (CPUs) will be awarded to those attending the seminar – the first time such credit has been offered at IWCE.

“This is a great opportunity to present the university to an audience of 7,000 people from all over the world,” Maconachy said. “Those attending can experience the breadth and depth of our instructors. A portion of the program is going to be delivered into the room via our distance learning platform. So we’re going to be calling in some of our senior instructors from all over the United States to do one hour sections of the full eight hour program.”

“It’s our hope and desire that people and companies will find this of great interest and discover things that we do at Capitol Technology University, including our master’s, doctoral and certificate programs. Going further it may even open up doors for us to establish one-on-one relationships with particular companies or sections of industries to develop and deliver customized cybersecurity-related instruction,” Maconachy continued.

Since 1977, the International Wireless Communications Expo (IWCE) has gathered 350 of the major technology manufacturers to showcase the latest in communications technology.  Its unparalleled education program offers five days of education in major technology initiatives and trends including FirstNet, next-generation networks, spectrum and signal management, infrastructure and of course, cybersecurity.

“IWCE is thrilled to partner with Capitol Technology University to provide the ‘Introduction Cybersecurity’ to our attendees.  The topic is essential to everyone in the communications technology or wireless industry, and Capitol is the best resource to provide education,” said Stacey Orlick, Event and Content Director of IWCE. “The course is a full day on Tuesday, March 17 the day before the exhibition opens.  All registrants for the course will receive a free exhibition pass as well which also includes access to IWCE’s Keynote Addresses, General Session, Town Hall Meetings and Networking Event.”
