Capitol: A Next Step for BCCC Students

Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) students had the opportunity to learn more about Capitol College’s degree programs during a STEM Community Day held on November 23rd. The event, held at the BCCC Fine Arts Building, featured robotics and machinery demonstrations, workshops, and a college/career expo.

Capitol College representatives were on hand to provide information and answer questions. According to Admissions Recruiter Samantha Van Sant (pictured), enthusiasm was high.

“Students were walking up to our table declaring that they wanted to go to Capitol College before I even had a chance to say hello,” she said.

Joining Van Sant at the Capitol table was student ambassador Joshua Lewis, who shared his Capitol experience with potential recruits.

A new agreement between the two institutions makes Capitol an especially attractive option for BCCC robotics students after they earn their Associate Degree.

The accord, inked in October, stipulates which credits from the BCCC Robotics/Mechatronics Technology program can be applied towards a bachelor’s degree at Capitol, thus ensuring students do not take more credits than they need.

The deal means “there’s no confusion when it comes to evaluating transcripts,” Van Sant explained. “It makes it easier for a student to transfer into Capitol.”

BCCC graduates have a variety of options to choose from as they continue their education, but Van Sant believes programs such as the electrical engineering major give Capitol an edge. The EE and EET programs are “a big draw,” she said.

Events such as the STEM Community Day offer an opportunity to get the word out. “We're working with BCCC to encourage more of their students to go to Capitol,” Van Sant said.
