Dr. Richard Todd Shilling

Occupational Safety & HealthDr. Shilling is an adjunct professor and Doctoral Chair for Capitol Technology University, and currently works in the offshore oil and gas industry as a Project HSE Lead for all topside and subsea activities. He is thoroughly knowledgeable in safety and health requirements, and more specifically, for offshore oil and gas exploration, drilling, maritime, regulatory compliance, and shipyard scenarios with a considerable history of working in multiple international locations. He brings an extensive background in HSE, operations management, project management, and maritime operations. He is also a Nationally Registered Paramedic with 30 years of experience in both emergent and non-emergent settings. Dr. Shilling completed his Ph.D. in Occupational Health & Safety from Capitol Technology University with a focus on the user-level implications / human factors of wearable safety technologies in the international oil and gas industry.
New advancements in his field include technology of all types and topics in psychological safety.
A quote he often uses is a commonly heard saying in the oilfield: “It is what it is;” when times get tough. In other words, the problem is in front of you and you must find a way to deal with it, or “find a way or make one”, as the university slogan goes. Some simple advice he offers to students is “work hard, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to fail.”
