Top STEM Advancements and the Impact of STEM Innovations on Our Daily Lives
April 19, 2023What is the greatest invention of all time? If someone asked you, what would you say?
Advancements in STEM have had a profound impact on our everyday lives. From turning on the faucet to turning off the lights, technological innovations are seen in every aspect of what we do. And this applies not only to what has been achieved in the past and present, but also future opportunities to improve and enhance the human condition and experience. CNBC (2023) states that “STEM-related jobs are expected to increase by nearly 800,000 by 2031,” making these fields a lucrative career path for many aspiring leaders and innovators looking to make a difference in a growing industry.
Each area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math has seen significant advancements over the decades. Here, we will explore the growth of these industries and their impact on our daily lives.
The Impact of Science Innovations
The life and health sciences have seen significant historical developments over time. This is especially true of the healthcare industry, which is a multi-billion-dollar industry that facilitates the research and development of pharmaceuticals, treatments, medical staff and training, hospitals and labs, and more.
Advancements in science have led to lower birth mortalities, longer lifespans, and overall improved quality of life on a global level. Efforts to decrease disparities and reduce barriers to public health are a current critical initiative being addressed in today’s world and innovative steps are being taken to increase affordability and accessibility to public health in our communities.
Similarly, the field of occupational safety and health has seen innovations aimed at improving the wellbeing of its employees and the public. Technology usage is continually progressing in this field, as the risks of many jobs are being more closely analyzed and mitigated, and human factors now play a larger role in the decision-making process for many companies. Finding ways to use technology to benefit employees and the general public are now seeing increased focus with an expected future growth in this industry.

The Impact of Technology Innovations
From artificial intelligence to self-driving cars to GPS, the ways in which technology has advanced are seemingly endless. Technology has been integrated into every aspect of life, making it the largest global industry, and every day it sees continued application, expansion, and success.
The development of the cell phone is just one great example of the fusion of many technologies into one fundamental device. Cell phones provide communication across all platforms, grant access to endless information via the internet, and include a camera for photos and videos. This device is comprised of what used to require three separate devices: the telephone, the computer, and the camera. Their seamless integration has made this device one of the most marketable products in history. Innovations like this are just one of the many examples of how technology is used to greatly improve profitability and enhance the overall human experience.
Capitol provides many programs related to cyber education across all major industries and our institution has been recognized by the National Security Agency (NSA) and Department of Defense (DoD) as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (NCAE-CD).
The Impact of Engineering Innovations
The field of engineering has seen many significant advancements in terms of hardware and software usage. The development of sustainable materials, focus on environmental impacts, using robotics and mechatronics to create devices, spacecraft technology, and other innovations have all contributed to the progression of this dynamic field. Examples of major steps taken in engineering are seen with the evolution of the space telescope. By improving upon the technology used for the original Hubble telescope in 1990, astronautical engineers were able to create the new James Webb Space Telescope in 2021. The new mechanics of this spacecraft allow us to see further into deep space, providing potential insight into the origins of the universe. This is a significant leap forward in the accomplishments of this growing field and will greatly impact future engineering and space exploration initiatives like humans living on Mars.
Capitol offers undergraduate Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, and Astronautical Engineering as well as Construction Management degrees to help students build a strong foundation in these growing fields.
The Impact of Math Innovations
Advancements in mathematics led to the development of concepts like quantum computing. In 2007, quantum computing was believed to be impossible, as the physics and technology needed to support it simply did not exist yet. Fast-forward to 2019 when IBM made the first commercial quantum computer a reality. Today in 2023, quantum computing is being explored for use in many areas including cryptocurrency processes, algorithmic trading, healthcare data analytics, genomic research, and cybersecurity. According to the Digital Speaker (2022), “there are billions of dollars being poured into quantum technology research and development by governments and companies on a global scale,” making this one of the top industries of the future and a major advancement in STEM that was once thought impossible.
Capitol offers a BS in Computer Science to address the increasing industrial need for professionals in computer science and related STEM fields.
