2025 Aviation Industry Trends: The Next Year in Business Aviation Growth

December 27, 2024

The global business aviation industry is on the brink of a transformative era, fueled by rising demands and significant investment in new aircraft supply. The industry has come a long way since the difficulties imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and Honeywell’s latest Global Business Aviation Outlook highlights an optimistic trajectory for the next decade, projecting 8,500 new business jet deliveries valued at $280 billion. Deliveries in 2025 alone are forecasted to rise by 12% compared to 2024, signaling a robust recovery in available aircraft and sustained growth in this sector. Here, we look at the evolving industry trends, technological advancements, and shifting market demands that are fueling this anticipated surge.

Expanding the Aviation Industry Customer Base

Traditionally dominated by corporations and high-net-worth individuals, business aviation is now attracting first-time buyers from emerging markets due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has reshaped perceptions around both private and commercial aviation offerings. Health concerns, coupled with reduced commercial flight availability during the pandemic, has led many uniquely-positioned companies and individuals to explore private travel for the first time, as business jets simply offer higher convenience, increased privacy, and more direct access to airports globally compared to commercial airlines. This trend persists post-pandemic, and Honeywell’s survey reveals that 80% of new business jet users intend to continue leveraging private aviation even as commercial flight networks fully recover. This shift underscores the long-term potential for increased utilization and new entrants into the market.

Beyond the emerging market potential, Honeywell’s report indicates that nearly 30% of established global business jet operators like Boeing and Airbus plan to purchase new jets within the next five years to keep up with supply demand and replace outdated planes. And with a backlog of jet orders totaling $50 billion, this trending fleet renewal cycle is expected to contribute to a sustained increase in deliveries over the next decade. Larger cabin jets, known for their extended range and superior amenities, remain the most sought-after category, comprising 72% of projected expenditures in Honeywell’s outlook. Looking ahead, the global fleet size is likely to grow considerably, with North America accounting for approximately 62% of new deliveries.

Evolving economies in regions such as Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East are experiencing at least a 30% increase in business aviation activity as well, benefiting from the overall global recovery in corporate travel. As businesses resume international engagements, the need for flexible, rapid transportation solutions is becoming increasingly critical. According to the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), “business travel spending worldwide is projected to reach an all-time high of $1.48 trillion by the end of 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic levels for the first time.” GBTA also reported that “61% of travelers and 68% of business travel managers report spending more this year than last” and “spending will top $2 trillion in 2028,” putting business aviation on a path of significant growth.

Fueling an Innovative and Sustainable Business Aviation Future

Manufacturers are also investing heavily in innovative technologies such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), hybrid-electric propulsion systems, and aerodynamic improvements to reduce the carbon footprint of business jets. These advancements align with global sustainability goals, making private aviation a potentially viable option for environmentally conscious consumers, and business jet operators are increasingly focused on upgrading to more fuel-efficient models equipped with new cutting-edge technology to replace aircraft that no longer meet modern efficiency and performance standards. Honeywell’s report findings also emphasize the growing importance of advanced avionics and cabin technologies, and features like high-speed in-flight connectivity, enhanced comfort, and autonomous flight systems are becoming standard expectations, particularly among newer and younger affluent buyers.
